Kirtipur is a historic hilltop town located about 5 kilometers southwest of Kathmandu, perched at an altitude of 1,405 meters. This ancient city is one of the oldest settlements in the Kathmandu Valley, with a rich history dating back over 2,000 years.

The town is known for its traditional Newari culture and architecture, featuring narrow winding streets, ancient temples, and traditional brick houses. Notable landmarks include the Bagh Bhairab Temple and Chilancho Stupa, which offer panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayan range on clear days.

Kirtipur is home to Tribhuvan University, Nepal’s first and largest university, which has given the town a unique blend of traditional and academic culture. The municipality has a population of approximately 67,000 and is famous for its traditional Newari cuisine, handicrafts, and for being one of the last strongholds during the Gorkhali conquest of the valley. The town maintains a quieter, more authentic atmosphere compared to the busier cities in the valley.
