Bhaktapur, meaning ‘City of Devotees,’ is an ancient city located about 13 kilometers east of Kathmandu. Known for its authentic medieval atmosphere and exceptional preservation of traditional Newari culture, Bhaktapur offers visitors a glimpse into Nepal’s glorious past.
The city is home to Bhaktapur Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the 55-Window Palace, Nyatapola Temple (the tallest temple in Nepal), and numerous other architectural marvels. Unlike its neighboring cities, Bhaktapur has successfully maintained much of its original character, with narrow brick-paved streets, traditional courtyards, and ancient temples.
With a population of around 80,000, Bhaktapur is also famous for its pottery, woodcarving, and traditional crafts. The city is renowned for its delicious yogurt (juju dhau) and celebrates numerous festivals throughout the year, including the spectacular Bisket Jatra during Nepali New Year. The well-preserved medieval ambiance makes Bhaktapur feel like stepping back in time.
