Madhyapur Thimi, commonly known as Thimi, is a vibrant municipality located between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur in the eastern part of the Kathmandu Valley. The city covers an area of 5.52 square kilometers and sits at an average elevation of 1,235 meters above sea level.

Thimi is renowned as a center for traditional pottery and papier-mâché mask-making, with skilled artisans continuing these ancient crafts that have been passed down through generations. The town’s name ‘Thimi’ comes from the Newari word meaning ‘capable people,’ reflecting the residents’ reputation for craftsmanship.

With a population of approximately 48,000, Madhyapur Thimi celebrates one of Nepal’s most colorful festivals, the Sindoor Jatra (Vermillion Powder Festival), during Nepali New Year. The municipality features several important temples including Balkumari Temple and numerous traditional Newari settlements. The city maintains its traditional character while being well-connected to both Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, making it an important cultural and commercial hub in the valley.
