Mahankal is a rural municipality in the northern part of Lalitpur district, bordering Kathmandu. The area represents a transition zone between Lalitpur’s urban core and rural hinterlands.

The municipality encompasses several traditional Newari villages and agricultural areas. Despite its proximity to urban centers, Mahankal maintains much of its rural character with farming being a primary occupation. The area features several cultural and religious sites important to local communities.

Mahankal is experiencing gradual development pressure from the expanding urban areas of Lalitpur and Kathmandu. The municipality is working to balance development needs with preservation of agricultural lands and traditional culture.
